Overview
This course is designed to leave graduates with all the foundation, technical, physical and musical skills necessary to become competent DJs.
Modules
- Safety – The importance of a clean and efficient working area, tidy, organized cabling and common safety procedures.
- Equipment & Setup – What compents are needed in a basic DJ setup. Understanding the turntable and mixer and its various components.
- Track Structure – Introduction to beats, bars and phrases. How dance music is structured and the different sound elements. Track structures and the affect on the mix.
- Vinyl Manipulation – Handling vinyl correctly and cueing up.
- Headphone Handling – Cueing up with headphones. Split cueing and setting the correct volumes. Headphone referencing.
- Beat Matching & Mixing – Phrase and drop mixing including cutting. The use of EQs. Line level mixing. Cross fader and mixer functions.
- Record Purchasing – Buying records in store and online. Tune recognition and trainspotting. Choosing the right tracks.
- Set Construction – Picking appropriate music for a venue or audience. Artistry and how to best represent your chosen sound.

Advanced DJ Skills

(Advanced DJ skills are taught as 1 on 1 private sessions, which are run over 9 weeks. This allows students to gain practical insight which is tailored to their interest, skill & learning pace.)
Overview
This is a 5 session intense learning experience, suitable for those that have completed the Beginner DJ Course (with at least a few months of practice experience) or those that have been DJing for a while and want to improve their skills.
Modules
- Technical Efficiency ‐ learn the most efficient way to use your setup.
- Pitch Mixing – learn how to beatmatch using pitch alone. Covers advanced techniques for fast mixing with minimal vinyl manipulation.
- Advanced Mixing – beat juggling, drop pressure and peak mixing. Incorporate more than 2 sound sources with CD mixing and 3 or more decks.
- Phrase Matching – choosing tracks that blend musically and phrase matching.
- Effects – echo, delay, phasing, flanging, distortion, filters, loops and their application to the mix.
- Sonic Theory – covers eliminating distortion and advanced use of EQ ranges in micing as well as the fundamentals of sound wave characteristics.
- Other formats – learn the art of mixing on CD and digital formats like Serato.

- Sequencers: How they work and creating individual parts.
- Sequencing: Utilizing parts and structuring a composition.
- Mixers: Introduction and routing/signal flow. Levels, panning & automation.
- Mixing: EQ & Compression.
- Mixing: Reverbs, delays & time based FX. (Chorus/Phasers/Flangers)
- Mastering: The final stage.
